What are the principles of the Law of Armed Conflict that Israel adhered to - and Hamas did not?

One principle is the principle of distinction - whereby parties must distinguish, at all times, between the civilian population and combatants.

Parties must avoid deliberate targeting of civilians. However, this principle but does not apply to incidental harm to civilians in the course of striking at lawful military objectives.
