NOTARIAL FUNCTIONS

21 Aug 2000

By the authority of the Notaries Law 5736-1976, the following operations may be carried out at the nearest Israeli mission :

  1. Authentication of a signature/copy; power of attorney; affidavit
  2. Authentication of public documents
  3. Life certificate

These services are also offered to foreign nationals if they are needed for use in Israel.

AUTHENTICATION OF SIGNATURE/POWER OF ATTORNEY/AFFIDAVIT
One who wishes to authenticate a signature, sign a power of attorney, give an affidavit or verify a copy against the original document, may turn to the consular representative at the nearest Israeli mission .
The applicant must bring his passport and two copies of the document in question, one of which will stay at the mission.
There is a fee for this service.

AUTHENTICATION OF PUBLIC DOCUMENTS
The term "public document" refers to documents that were issued by a court of law, certificates of birth, marriage, divorce, death, official permits, documents relating to seamanship, etc.
The following is required:
1. To have the document authenticated by an authorized judicial or public body.
2. To have the body's signature authenticated by the local Foreign Ministry.
3. Authentication at an Israeli mission

Note: The Hague Convention of 1961 eliminated the necessity for authentication concerning foreign public documents bearing a stamp with the heading:
"Apostille - Convention de la Haye du 5 Octobre 1961".

These documents are valid in Israel even without a consular confirmation and there is no need to authenticate them at an Israeli mission. In any case, the mission will not authenticate documents issued by states that are a party to the Convention.

Details concerning the states that are parties to the Convention and the bodies authorized to give the "Apostille" stamp can be found on the Internet. There is a fee for these services.

LIFE CERTIFICATE
A person staying abroad who receives allowances from the State of Israel and must prove that he is alive may apply to the nearest mission with an identifying document in order to get a life certificate.
