FM Peres meets with ICRC President Kellenberger
(Communicated by the Foreign Minister's Bureau)
7 October 2002
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met today
(October 7) with the President of the International Red Cross, Jacob
Kellenberger. The two discussed the humanitarian situation in the
territories.
Foreign Minister Peres noted that Israel is very interested in
improving the conditions of residents of the territories. Although
fully aware of the situation there, Israel is operating under a very
difficult dilemma, as every easing of curfews and travel restrictions
is followed by terrorist attacks against Israel.
Mr. Kellenberger said that he is aware of Israel's security needs,
but noted that the ICRC feels that Israel can and should do more in
this area.
Foreign Minister Peres raised the subject of the Israeli MIAs in
Lebanon and the kidnapped civilian Elhanan Tenenboim. The ICRC
president said that his organization is making great efforts in this
matter but, unfortunately, without results to date.
