Eritrea to open Embassy in Israel

21 Jun 2004
FM Shalom received an official message from the Eritrean government announcing their intent to open an embassy in Israel.
(Communicated by the Foreign Minister's Bureau)

During the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting today (June 21), Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom announced that Eritrea would be opening an embassy in Israel. FM Shalom received an official message from the Eritrean government announcing their intent to open the embassy. This development comes in the wake of intensive efforts by FM Shalom and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to improve and to establish relations with Arab and Muslim countries. Israel opened an embassy in Eritrea in 1993, two years after it achieved independence.

Eritrea, with a population of 50 percent Muslims, is an observer in the Arab League and is located strategically, bordering Ethiopia and Sudan with the red Sea to its North.

This marks the first embassy to be opened in Israel in more than four years.
