FM Livni briefs the Cabinet on diplomatic affairs

19 Mar 2006

FM Livni discussed international reactions to the Jericho operation, Iran and Hamas.

(Communicated by the Foreign Minister's Bureau)

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni reported today (March 19) to the Cabinet that the operation in Jericho to bring the murderers of Rehavam Ze'evi into custody was received with understanding by the international community. Although the Palestinians sought, by means of Qatar, to bring about international condemnation of Israel, following intensive diplomatic activity by Israel among the members of the UN Security Council, the Palestinian move was foiled.

On Monday, March 20, a directors general meeting of the P3 and the EU3 (US, Great Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China) will be held on the issue of Iran's nuclear program. Last week Foreign Minister Livni met with the director-general of the French Foreign Ministry and expressed support for France's determined position on the issue. A policy statement is expected to be issued on Tuesday.

At the upcoming summit meeting of the Arab League in Khartoum on March 27, an attempt will be made by the League members to erode the three threshhold conditions fixed by the international community for the Hamas government:
- Recognition of the State of Israel and cancellation of the Hamas Charter.
- Abandoning the path of terrorism and dismantling terrorist infrastructure.
- Recognition of agreements and understandings between Israel and the Palestinians.
