Dear Reader:

The Autumn 1997 issue of Israel Environment Bulletin focuses once again on the subject of biodiversity conservation. It presents an overview of Israel's national report to the Convention on Biological Diversity; it introduces two recently approved biodiversity conservation projects for the Gulf of Aqaba and the Hula Valley; and it gives voice to the views and the concerns of representatives of Israel's academic institutions on such subjects as species extinction and landscape conservation. As environmental awareness grows and development pressures rise, the need to preserve the country's rich natural heritage will become even more crucial. Hopefully, Israel's decision makers will take account of the true value of these natural riches when determining future paths of development.
