Israel Environment Bulletin Summer 1992-5752, Vol. 15, No. 3
FROM THE MINISTER OF THE ENVIRONMENT, ORA NAMIR
It is a special honor for me to serve as Israel's first full-time
Minister of the Environment. My parliamentary experience goes back
a long wayto 1973, the year in which the Environmental Protection
Service was first established, heralding the beginning of Israel's
environmental movement.
Over the past few months, I have had the privilege to meet an
unusual group of people. Although the ministry's staff is
relatively small in quantity, it enjoys a fine qualitative edge.
Rarely have I met such a group of dedicated professionals. Due to
the unflinching efforts of Dr. Uri Marinov over a period of some
nineteen years, I can confidently say that the very best
professionals now serve the cause of the environment within the
framework of the Ministry of the Environment.
I come to this ministry with high expectationsto dramatically
improve the state of the environment in Israel, to radically
advance environmental consciousness, to boost environmental
education from kindergarten to university, to advance environmental
legislation and enforcement, especially in such areas as sewage and
solid waste, and to increase cooperation with government
ministries, local authorities, industry and public organizations so
that we may all enjoy a better quality of life and the environment
in this country.
The task is formidable. Yet, with a combination of hard work,
perseverance and dedication, we will fulfill the mission,
accomplish the task.
