ENVIRONMENT WORKING GROUP MEETS IN THE NETHERLANDS

The fifth round of the multilateral peace talks opened on Wednesday,
April 6, 1994, in The Hague with a meeting of the working group on the
environment. The Israeli delegation, led by Environment Ministry
Director-General Dr. Yisrael Peleg and Foreign Ministry Deputy
Director-General Yossi Gal, expressed its satisfaction after the first
day of discussions. Yesterday's talks were characterized by a practical
approach and the willingness to advance joint environmental projects.
Bahrain announced its desire to host the working group's next session.
Israel welcomed the proposal.
In the wake of the terrorist attack in Afula, the Palestinian
representative, Dr. Jahd Yischak, expressed his sorrow at the loss of
life in tragic events in the region. The head of the American
delegation, Tom Miller, sharply condemned the incident.
During the discussions, the European Community announced a contribution
of $3 million for establishing, staffing and maintaining three centers
for fighting marine pollution in Eilat, Aqaba, and Nuweiba. The World
Bank outlined an anti-desertification project.
