ISRAEL TRANSFERS ADDITIONAL WATER TO JORDAN
August 8, 1994
(Communicated by Agriculture Ministry Spokesman)
Water Commissioner Gideon Tzur announced that Israel has begun to transfer
4 million cubic meters of water from the Yarmuk River to Jordan, by order
of Prime Minister Rabin, as a gesture to King Hussein in view of the
severe shortage of water after the very warm winter.
The water will be transferred to Jordan's two main cities Irbid and
Amman and will be used for drinking purposes. The Water Commissioner
stressed that the transfer is for a limited period of several months and
is not a precedent for the future. In very warm years in the past, Israel
has transferred 2 - 3 million cubic meters of Yarmuk water to Jordan.
Tzur announced that the transfer of water is not permanent and does not
solve the two countries' water problem. He added that joint desalination
plants are the basis for the solution of the water problem; these could
provide another 200 million cubic meter of water to the region.
