Water and Electriticy

Gaza

- Electricity:

The Israel Electric Company supplies electricity to the municipalities and local councils in bulk, from three transmission stations within Israel:
North - Karmiya Station.
Center - Netivot Station.
South - Besor Station.

98 percent of the population is connected to the electricity grid.

- Water:

The sources of water for the Gaza Area are:
a. The Gaza Coastal Aquifer;
b. The Israel National Water Carrier (through the Kissufim Line).
The large number of private wells in the Gaza Area makes it almost impossible to control the level of pumping from the underground aquifer.

Today, annual consumption in the Gaza Area is 90 million cubic meters (60 percent for irrigation and 40 percent for domestic and industrial consumption), while annual replenishment of the aquifer is only approximately 60 million cubic meters per year, causing a deficit of 33 percent. This is an improvement compared to 1967, when annual consumption was approximately 120 million cubic meters - a deficit of 50 percent. This was possible through the introduction of advanced irrigation techniques and other efficiency improvement measures. The Kissufim line provides approximately 4 million cubic meters to the Arab sector living in El-Bureij, Moazi, Abasan, Bani Suheila and Khan Yunis.

A pilot installation of Reverse Osmosis Facilities for the purification of brackish well-water operates at Dir El-Balah, with a capacity of 400,000 cubic meters per annum.

Jericho:

- Electricity:

Jericho and the surrounding area receive electricity from the East Jerusalem Electric Company. The network serves all of the population.

- Water:

The water source of the city of Jericho is the Ein Sultan well. The supply of this source is approximately 5 million cubic meters per annum, of which 1 million supplies the city of Jericho and the rest is used for irrigation. Furthermore, there are private wells supplying water for agriculture (approximately 5 million cubic meters per annum).

Telecommunications

Gaza Area:

1967 - 1,000 phone lines from 4 manually operated telephone exchanges.

1994 - more than 16,000 phone lines from six automated telephone exchanges.

Jericho:

There is one SE 50 telephone exchange with a capacity of 1,500 lines in Jericho, connected to the district network. Two electronic connectors provide another 240 lines from the Ramallah exchange.

- Number of vehicles:

Gaza Area: 30,000 (at the end of 1993)
