72. Statement by Israel and Egypt on the Autonomy Talks, 12 November 1981.
Another round of talks was held in Cairo on 11-12 November, but failed to produce any major breakthrough. Even an attempt to reach an agreement on the key principles of the autonomy was unsuccessful. The next day, a joint statement was issued, working teams were instructed to "present a draft agreement on understandings and principles for ministers' consideration" No target date for the continuation of the talks was determined. The following statements were issued at the conclusion of the first day of the talks:
Dr. Yosef Burg (Chairman of Israel's delegation): "The Camp David Agreement is the firm and only base for the force of peace in our region, and the President, Mr. Mubarak, said it with very clear and distinct words. Secondly, concerning the autonomy negotiations, all the parties, and we heard it on behalf of Egypt again, said by President Mubarak, are interested to come to a firm and fast conclusion as far as possible".
Minister Kamal Hassan Ali: "Certainly we are working very hard since yesterday and hopefully we can conclude some progress in (sic) this evening. We will be meeting today, but it is not planned yet that we will meet on the Ministerial level in the near future." |
