16 JanuaryAnother autonomy talks round is concluded in Tel-Aviv. Egypt, Israel and the U.S. announce their intention to pursue the issue.
19-25 JanuaryAn Egyptian Parliamentary delegation visits Israel as guests of the Knesset.
28 JanuarySix Israelis are wounded by Katyusha rockets fired at Kiryat Shmona from Lebanon.
29 JanuaryIsraeli airplanes raid terrorist targets in southern Lebanon.
24 FebruaryForeign Minister Shamir meets President Reagan at the White House.
During his visit to the U.S. he also met with Vice President Bush, Secretary of State Haig and Secretary of Defense Weinberger.
2 MarchIsraeli jets attack terrorist targets near Tyre following katyusha attack on Kiryat Shmona.
22 AprilIsrael condemns the U.S. decision to supply sophisticated weapons to Saudi Arabia.
28 AprilIsraeli jets down two Syrian helicopters near Zahla in Lebanon. Prime Minister Begin explained the action as an effort to prevent Syrian domination of Lebanon.
29 AprilSyria introduces S.A. 6 ground to air missiles into the Bekka Valley in
Lebanon. Israeli planes attack targets in south Lebanon.
4 JunePrime Minister Begin and President Sadat meet in Sharm El-Sheikh (0fira).
8 JuneIsraeli jets destroy the Ossiraq nuclear reactor near Baghdad.
10 JuneThe U.S. suspends arms deliveries to Israel in the wake of the Baghdad raid.
20 JuneThe Security Council condemns Israel for the raid on the Iraqi nuclear reactor.
30 JuneIsrael elects the tenth Knesset. Likud wins 48 seats, Labor 47. Mr. Begin starts talks for the formation of the new government.
13 JulyPrime Minister Begin meets with Ambassador Habib and Councellor McFarlane in an effort to defuse the tension between Israel and the U.S. and to ease the tension along Israel's northern border.
15 JulyIn heavy shelling of northern Galilee, 3 Israelis are killed in Nahariyah and 17 wounded in Kiryat Shmona.
17 JulyContinued shelling of Israeli towns and villages in the north, Israeli planes and artillery attack terrorist bases in Lebanon.
19 JulyRahariyah shelled. Prime Minister Begin meets with Ambassador Habib.
21 JulyThe Israel government authorizes Ambassador Habib to negotiate a cease fire with the President of Lebanon.
24 JulyIsrael accepts a cease fire proposal brought by Ambassador Habib. In ten days of shelling six Israelis were killed, 65 wounded. Heavy damage caused to homes, factories and public buildings.
28 JulyThe Knesset approves the agreement for the creation of a multi national force in Sinai (it was approved by the cabinet on 15 July). The agreement was signed in Washington on 3 August.
5 AugustThe Knesset votes confidence in the second Begin Cabinet (61 in favour, 58 against).
25-26 AugustPrime Minister Begin, accompanied by Foreign Minister Shamir, Defense Minister Sharon and Interior Minister Burg hold talks in Alexandria with President Sadat and his senior advisers. It was decided to resume the autonomy talks in late September.
6-16 SeptemberPrime Minister Begin, accompanied by Ministers Shamir, Sharon and Burg visit Washington for talks with President Reagan and his senior advisers on U.S. arms sale to Saudi Arabia and U.S.-Israel strategic cooperation agreement.
13 SeptemberIsraeli and Egyptian working groups discuss normalization between the two countries in Jerusalem.
6 OctoberPresident Sadat is assassinated in Cairo. Israeli leaders eulogize the late president.
10 OctoberPrime Minister Begin represents Israel at Sadat's funeral, meets with President Mubarak and Secretary of State Haig in Cairo.
16 OctoberMoshe Dayan, former chief of staff, defense minister and foreign minister is dead at 66.
27 OctoberIsrael and Egypt conclude three days of discussions on the normalization process, led by Defense Minister Sharon and Egyptian Foreign Minister Kamal Hassan Ali. Series of agreements are signed.
29 OctoberIsrael condemns a U.S. Senate vote to approve sale of AWACS to Saudi Arabia.
2 NovemberIn a speech to the Knesset, Prime Minister Begin rejects Prince Fahd 8 Point Peace Plan.
11-12 NovemberNo progress reported after two days of talks between Israel and Egypt on the autonomy plan.
17 NovemberPresident Navon pays a condolence visit on Mrs. Jihan Sadat in Cairo and meets with President Mubarak.
30 NovemberDefense Minister Sharon and U.S. Secretary of Defense Weinberger sign in Washington a "Memorandum of Understanding on Strategic Cooperation between the U.S. and Israel".
12 DecemberFrench Foreign Minister Claude Cheysson visits Israel.
13 DecemberChief of Staff Eitan and Air Force Chief Ivri visit Egypt as guests of the Egyptian chief of staff.
14 DecemberThe Knesset approves the Golan Heights Law (71 in favour, 34 against), instituting Israel law and administration there.
18 DecemberThe U.S. suspends the implementation of the strategic cooperation agreement. The Security Council calls on Israel to rescind forthwith the Golan Heights Law.
20 DecemberPrime Minister Begin informs U.S. Ambassador to Israel Lewis that Israel views the suspension of the strategic cooperation agreement as tantamount to its annulment.

15 JanuaryU.S. Secretary of State Haig visits Israel.
19 JanuaryThe Supreme Israel-Egypt Commission meets in Cairo, a memorandum detailing the withdrawal from Sinai and normalization of relations was signed by Defense Minister Sharon, who also met with President Mubarak.
20 JanuaryProfessor Moshe Arens is appointed as Israel's Ambassador to Washington.
28 JanuarySecretary of State Haig again visits Israel for talks on the autonomy plan,
2 FebruaryThe U.N. General Assembnly condemns Israel for the passage of the Golan Heights Law.
7 FebruaryThe Egyptian Chief of Staff visits Israel as guest of General Eitan.
15 FebruaryThe Knesset expressed its regrets over U.S. sale of F-16 and Hawk missiles to Jordan.
23-25 FebruaryForeign Minister Shamir holds talks in Cairo, meets President Mubarak.
MarchIsrael proceeds to dismantle and remove its civilian settlements in northern Sinai.
3-5 MarchPresident Francois Mitterand visits Israel, accompanied by the French ministers for foreign affairs, finance and culture.
3 MarchDefense Minister Sharon and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ali visit the Israel-Egypt border to discuss the Taba issue and the Rafiah area, two controversial places.
16 MarchAn Egyptian delegation headed by Kamal Hassan Ali meets in Jerusalem with Prime Minister Begin and Ministers Shamir and Sharon to discuss the border issues and Israel-Egypt relations after the completion of the Israeli withdrawal from Sinai.
29 MarchBritain's Foreign Secretary Carrington visits Israel.
3 AprilAn Israeli diplomat is assassinated by terrorists in Paris.
15 AprilDefense Minister Sharon holds talks in Cairo with President Mubarak and with the Egyptian ministers for foreign affairs and defense.
16 AprilIsrael demands that Egypt reaffirm its commitment to the Camp David Accords. Egypt promises to rectify violations of the Israel-Egypt peace treaty.
19 AprilOn the eve of the Israeli withdrawal from Sinai, Egyptian Vice Premier and Minister for Foreign Affairs Ali holds talks in Jerusalem with Prime Minister Begin. Progress is achieved on outstanding issues.
21 AprilIsrael downs two Syrian MIGs over Lebanon, bombs terrorist bases in Sidon.
25 AprilIsrael completes its withdrawal from Sinai. President Reagan congratulates President Mubarak and Prime Minister Begin on the new phase of Israel-Egypt ties.
9 MayIsraeli jets bomb terrorist targets in southern Lebanon for the first time since 24 July 1981. Northern and Western Galilee are shelled by PLO artillery.
15 MayItalian Foreign Minister Colombo concludes a two day visit to Israel.
16 MayThe Israeli embassy in Kinshasa, Zaire, is re-opened after diplomatic ties resumed.
25 MayDefense Minister Sharon holds talks in Washington with Secretaries Haig and Weinberger.
2 JuneEgyptian Foreign Minister Ali holds talks in Jerusalem with Prime Minister Begin and Foreign Minister Shamir. Egypt persists in its refusal to hold the autonomy talks in Jerusalem.
3 JuneGermany's Foreign Minister Genscher visits Israel. Israels ambassador to London is shot and gravely wounded.
4 JuneIsraeli airplanes raid terrorist targets in Beirut and southern Lebanon. The PLO retaliates by massive artillery bombardment of the entire northern border causing heavy damage.
5 JuneThe cabinet approves a military operation against the PLO in Lebanon.
6 JuneIsraeli units enter Lebanon. Operation "Peace for Galilee" begins.
