152. Summary of a Meeting between Prime Minister Rabin and British Foreign Secretary Hurd, 4 January 1994.
In late 1993 the foreign ministers of the European Community finally granted Israel a mandate to conduct negotiations with the Community to revise and update the 1975 Economic Agreement with Israel. Mr. Rabin used the opportunity of the visit of Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd to thank Britain for its support and to update his guest on the peace process. He also raised the issue of the continued British arms embargo on Israel, already in its 12th year. Text:
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin met today in his office with British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd. The two discussed the Middle East situation and the peace process. Prime Minister Rabin presented Israel's positions in negotiations vis-a-vis Syria, Jordan and the PLO. In response to a question by Mr. Hurd, Prime Minister Rabin expressed hope that the meeting between U.S. President Clinton and Syrian President Assad in Geneva on 16 January would contribute to clarifying Syria's intentions in negotiations over its view on the nature of peace, and would aid in resuming the negotiations between Israel and Syria.
The two also discussed relations between Israel and Europe. Prime Minister Rabin thanked Mr. Hurd for his assistance in the decision by European foreign ministers to grant Israel a mandate to conduct negotiations with the European Community to update the economic-trade agreement with Israel. The British foreign Secretary promised that his country would act to tighten economic ties between Europe and Israel.
