162. Statement by President Weizman on the Hebron Murders, 25 February 1994.
President Weizman added his own enraged reaction to the Hebron murders in an effort to calm the Arab population in the territories and in Israel, and to counter the calls to suspend the peace process emanating from the Arab world. Text:
Today is a terrible and difficult day for Jew and Arab in this land. There is no understanding, no forgiveness, and no atonement for this horrible act. I extend my condolences to the families, the citizens of the city of Hebron, and the Arab population throughout the world.
This act must not be allowed to hurt the peace process and the chance of building a new reality of cooperation in the region.
At this difficult time, I call upon all the people of this land, leaders, clergy, Jews and Arabs, Christians and Moslems, to grieve together over every needless loss of life, to show restraint, and to prevent further deterioration, either by word or deed. |
