71. Letters from Prime Minister Rabin to President Walesa and Prime Minister Suchoka of Poland, 21 April 1993.

In his letters to the Polish leaders, Mr. Rabin expressed his gratitude for the reception accorded to him and his satisfaction with the content of the conversation he held with them. Texts:

The following is the text of a letter sent by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to Polish President Lech Walensa:

Having returned to Israel, I would like to thank you for the warm reception I received during my visit to Poland. It was a rare opportunity for me to learn

more about our painful past and, therefore, I returned determined to strengthen our independence and security.

I was happy that we were able to cover many issues, including the concrete steps that we want to take in order to advance the network of relations between our two countries.

I very much enjoyed our conversation, during which we managed to discuss the issues of the peace process, and the war against anti-Semitism and racism. I am acquainted with the role that you are filling in your country to enlist public opinion against the return of this source of calamity, and we thank you for the position you have taken on this matter and for serving as a central figure in this war.

Allow me also to express our appreciation for your initiative in the organization of the ceremony during which you paid respect to the victims of the Warsaw Ghetto and to the efforts of those Poles who risked their lives in order to save their Jewish countrymen.

Mr. President, allow me to express my thanks and to wish you good health and success in all your future endeavors.

The following is the text of a letter sent by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to Polish Prime Minister Anna Suchoka:

Having returned to Israel, I would like to express my thanks for the warm reception and the fruitful talks during my recent visit. It was also a rare opportunity for me to learn more about our painful past and, therefore, I returned determined to strengthen our independence and security.

I am convinced that we turned a new leaf in Polish-Israeli relations. As we said during our discussions, there are many opportunities for cooperation between our two countries in a number of areas and I hope that these are realized.

I would again like to say that a fundamental basis for the strengthening of ties between the Polish people and the people of Israel is constant awareness as to anti-Semitic elements. Your government has already demonstrated its commitment to this sensitive issue, at a time when racist slogans are again being sounded around the world.

I wish you and your government much success in this difficult time of transition and I have no doubt that the spirit of the new Poland will go forth and realize its full potential.

I anticipate your visit to Israel, when I will have an opportunity to repay you for the warm reception I received during my short stay in your country.
