21. Foreign Ministry Communique on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations
with Tanzania, 24 February 1995.
Tanzania was among the first nations to establish diplomatic ties with
Israel after it won its independence in 1963. But it was also among the
many African nations that broke off diplomatic ties with Israel during the
1973 Yom Kippur War. Relations continued at an informal level. In view of
the achievements of the peace process, and the resumption of ties between
Israel and most African nations, Tanzania saw no point in not normalizing
these ties.
On Friday, 24.2.95, Israel and Tanzania resumed diplomatic relations at
the ambassadorial level. This is being done in an effort to develop and
strengthen friendly relations and cooperation on the basis of the
universal principles of international law. The practical aspects of the
resumption of relations will be agreed to in further diplomatic
discussions.
