6. Foreign Ministry Statement on meeting of the Israel-Jordan
sub-committee on science, culture and education, 17 January 1995.
Even before the signing of the Israel-Jordan peace treaty on 26 October
1994, it was clear to both countries, that peace will depend not on a
formal declaration but on the contents Israel and Jordan will infuse
into it. Hence Israel ascribed a great deal of importance to negotiations
leading to agreements on various matters, among them cooperation in the
fields of science, culture and education. Text:
On Tuesday, 17.1.95, the third meeting of the Jordanian-Israeli
subcommittee in the areas of science, culture and education was held. The
meetings are held alternately every two to three weeks in Jordan and
Israel. Their objective is to draft an agreement on culture and science
between the two countries, according to Article 10 of the Peace Agreement
between Israel and Jordan. Until now, the two sides have been describing
their culture, science and education systems.
At this stage, the talks are concentrating on science and technological
education. Yesterday, the committee visited the technological and
vocational school in Carmiel, and discussed the possibilities of
cooperation in the fields of science and education.
The talks are being conducted in a good atmosphere and a desire for
cooperation that will find expression in an agreement between the two
countries and in practical programs in the fields of science, culture and
technology.
