31. Summary of a meeting between Crown Prince Hassan of Jordan and
Foreign Minister Peres, 12 March 1995.
Both Israel and Jordan were seeking to strengthen their peace treaty with
economic development projects that would be of mutual benefit. With this
in mind, the two countries were looking for outside help, mainly American,
European and Japanese. A meeting was scheduled for 15 March in Bonn, under
the aegis of Chancellor Kohl, to promote such projects. In advance of this
meeting, Crown Prince Hassan and Foreign Minister Peres met to coordinate
positions and plan new frameworks involving Israel, Jordan and Europe.
Text of the Foreign Ministry's communique follows:
Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met yesterday, (Sunday), 12.3.95, in Amman
with Crown Prince Hassan, in order to coordinate positions in advance of
their meeting this Wednesday in Bonn with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl
and the European Union Commissioner. Mr. Peres and Crown Prince Hassan
formulated a common position on projects for creating sources of water for
Jordan, as was specified in the Israel-Jordan Peace Treaty. The meeting in
Bonn will make possible a joint request for European aid to fund the
projects.
Peres and Hassan also discussed the following issues: promoting
substantive joint projects in the framework of the Jordan Valley program,
promoting the idea of establishing a regional educational committee,
turning the Aqaba-Eilat-Taba triangle into a free trade zone, the
establishment of a Europe-Jordan-Israel economic committee, preparations
for the Amman Conference, carrying out the joint regional effort to
establish a regional development bank and promoting the idea of creating a
regional security structure.
In Bonn, the two men will hold a joint press conference and the Crown
Prince together with the Israeli Foreign Minister and the German Foreign
Minister, Mr. Klaus Kinkel, will attend a dinner at the home of the
Israeli Ambassador in Bonn.
Following the meeting, Mr. Peres has been invited to a luncheon with
representatives of the Socialist International Middle East Committee. The
Crown Prince, in his remarks, praised Mr. Peres for his commitment to the
promotion of the regional economy.
