22. Prime Minister Netanyahu comments on talks with Syria, 8 September 1996.
On the eve of his departure to Washington for a second meeting with President Clinton, the Prime Minister explained his position on the talks, which was obviously totally different from that of the previous government. By that time, the IDF had monitored Syrian troop movements in southern Lebanon which gave cause for some alarm. Text:
The resumption of the peace talks with Syria will be one of the issues that I will discuss in Washington. I will make it clear that this government is not the previous government, and that it was elected on another platform. If anyone expects us to adopt the positions of our predecessors, he does not understand the Israeli democratic process.
I think that there is place to renew the talks. We have made various proposals on the matter that, in my opinion, are reasonable and fair. Contacts on this matter are also being held under the auspices of the United States.
