In order the demonstrate the continued French interest and involvement in the peace process, President Jacques Chirac dispatched to Israel the director-general of the French foreign ministry, Bernard Dufourcq. The visit was in advance of the planned visit of the president of France to Israel and gave Israel and France the opportunity to discuss both matters of common interest as well as the state of the peace process. Foreign Minister David Levy met today, 14.10.96, with French Foreign Ministry Director-General Bernard Dufourcq, who has arrived in Israel on behalf of French President Jacques Chirac. Foreign Minister Levy updated his guest on the progress in the talks with the Palestinians, and said that in his assessment, an agreement on the issue of security in Hebron will be reached shortly. He also clarified Israels position in the negotiations with Syria. Foreign Minister Levy welcomed French President Jacques Chiracs visit next week and said that he hopes that the visit will contribute to both a better understanding of Israels positions and the enhancement of coordination and ties between the two friendly countries.
