Mrs. Albright was well known to Israeli leaders, having served for four years as the U.S. representative to the United Nations. Now that she was selected to the post of secretary of state, Mr. Levy expressed the feelings of Israel over her elevation to this high position. Text:
To: U.S. Secretary of State-designate
Madeleine Albright
Please accept my warmest congratulations upon your nomination as Secretary of State.
Your personal qualities and great professional ability have always marked your work, particularly at the United Nations, where as U.S. Ambassador you have represented your country with elegant wisdom and firmness and with a determination and dedication born of the great values [which] the United States represents.
It was a true pleasure to meet you recently in New York and to work together in the Security Council. I was charmed by your personality and by the genuine friendship you displayed.
The people of Israel and the United States share a great tradition of friendship and cooperation derived from the fundamental values we share. I look forward to working closely with you in the spirit of our shared values in order to advance the special and unique relationship between our countries, and to bring peace to Israel and the Middle East.
