23. Summary of meeting between Defense Minister Mordechai and Abu Mazen, 1 March 1998.
In order to ensure that the political process was not frozen, periodic meetings were held between senior Israeli and senior PA officials. Some were held in the Gaza area, others in Jerusalem and in Tel Aviv and some in the homes of the American and Egyptian ambassadors to Israel. Following is a report of a meeting between Minister Mordechai and Abu Mazen, the "Number 2" in the PA:
Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai met with Abu Mazen Friday morning (27.2.98) for more than two hours at Dahaniyya airfield to discuss security arrangements that would enable the opening of the Karni industrial zone and the Dahaniyya airport. The meeting was held in a good atmosphere and both parties agreed on joint principles and decided that Israeli and Palestinian teams would meet next week in an attempt to reach an agreement. The Defense Minister said that Israel cannot compromise on the basic security arrangements needed at Karni and Dahaniyya.
Accompanying the Defense Minister at the meeting were Deputy Chief-of-Staff Major-General Shaul Mofaz, Director of General Staff Planning Division Major-General Shlomo Yannai, and Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Ya'akov Or, as well as other officials.
