  27. Telephone conversation between Prime Minister Netanyahu and Chairman Arafat,
10 March 1998.

In the morning of 10 March, Israeli soldiers mistakenly opened fire on a Palestinian car traveling near Tarkumiya. Its riders refused to halt at a roadblock and the soldiers feared they were about to fire at them. Three Palestinians were killed. In the wake of that incident, the Prime Minister spoke to Chairman Arafat. Text of the Prime Minister's Office statement follows:

In the wake of the incident in Tarkumiya yesterday evening (Tuesday 10 March 1998), Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu phoned Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat last night and expressed his condolences over the loss of life in the incident.

The Prime Minister said that Israel is conducting a comprehensive investigation in order to clarify the circumstances of the incident. He told Chairman Arafat that Israel is working to move peace with the Palestinians forward and that Israel is interested in advancing the political process and the work of the joint committees, which are now meeting. Prime Minister Netanyahu asked Chairman Arafat to convey his condolences to the families of the men who were killed.

Chairman Arafat told the Prime Minister that he, too, shares the desire to make progress in the peace process and that he would convey the Prime Minister's condolences to the families of the men killed.
