15. Letter from Foreign Minister Levy to Foreign Minister Ivanov of the Russian Federation regarding anti-Semitic acts in Russia, 27 July 1999.
In its role as the protector of Jewish communities worldwide from anti-Semitism, Israel's Foreign Minister Levy protested to the Russian government recent anti-Semitic manifestations and public and media comments in that country. Text:
Foreign Minister David Levy yesterday evening (Tuesday) 27.7.99, sent a sharp letter of protest to Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov in which he calls for the Russian government to condemn the recent outbreaks of anti-Semitism in Russia.
In July an important activist of the of the "Archifova" Synagogue was stabbed. and there was an attempt to blow up the Habad Synagogue. These events follow on anti-Semitic comments by Russian political figures and publications.
The Foreign Minister calls on his Russian counterpart to take all necessary measures to eliminate anti-Semitism and acts of violence against the Jewish community and its spiritual leaders.
