33. Summary of a meeting between Foreign Minister Levy and Morocco Liaison Office Head Lahcen, 30 August 1999.
On 25 July 1999, Israel had been represented at the funeral of the late King Hassan II by its President, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. King Mohammed VI lost no time in delving into the Arab-Israel negotiations and his representative in Israel requested information from FM Levy on the status of the talks. Text:
Foreign Minister David Levy today (Monday), 30.8.99, met in his Jerusalem office with the Head of the Moroccan Liaison Office, Ejit Lahcen, who brought a message from King Muhammad VI.
Foreign Minister Levy briefed his guest on the status of the negotiations with the Palestinians and presented Israel's position on the issues on the agenda. Mr. Lahcen asked for clarifications regarding Israel's positions in the negotiations in order to pass them onto King Muhammad VI.
Foreign Minister Levy praised the late King Hassan's wisdom and daring in opening relations with Israel five years ago. Levy stated that Israel is pleased with the relationship between the two countries and would welcome further progress in Israeli-Moroccan relations, noting in this context both his upcoming visit to the United Nations, where he is expected to meet Moroccan Foreign Minister Muhammad Ben-Aissa, and last week's visit to Morocco by a senior Israel Foreign Ministry official.
