PM Barak Praises Egyptian Decision to Export Natural Gas to Israel
(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)
After being informed of the decision by Egyptian Ambassador to Israel
Muhammad Bassiouny, Prime Minister Ehud Barak yesterday (Wednesday),
22.12.99, praised the Egyptian government's decision to export natural
gas to Israel. Ambassador Bassiouny further informed Prime Minister
Barak that the pipeline will run via El Arish.
In the first stage, Egypt intends to export gas - via this project - to
Israel and the Palestinian Authority and in later stages, to Turkey,
Lebanon and Syria as well. The entire project will be known as the
"Peace Pipeline."
Prime Minister Barak pointed out that he recently spoke with Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak and had wished success to those carrying out the
project.
It should be noted that Israel and Egypt will jointly carry out the
enterprise. The pipeline to Israel is expected to be completed in less
than two years.
