PM Barak's Comments at Today's Cabinet Meeting

(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)

At the start of the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Sunday), 14.11.99, Prime Minister and Defense Minister Ehud Barak commended the steadfastness of the soldiers of the South Lebanon Army, and its commander, General Antoine Lahad, during the Hizballah attack over the weekend.

Prime Minister Barak pointed out that the IDF's and SLA's ability to act in southern Lebanon has improved and added that the SLA's steadfastness is making possible the government's freedom of action in the political sphere, is helping it to conclude the continuing tragedy in Lebanon and withdraw IDF personnel from Lebanon by July 2000, by agreement.

The Prime Minister also mentioned the aid and rescue teams Israel has sent to Turkey in the wake of the latest earthquake there; his intention to attend the OSCE conference; and the need for international cooperation against terrorism.
