(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ehud Barak spoke today with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and during the conversation also spoke with the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Yasser Arafat, who was in Putin's office at that time.

The Prime Minister told President Putin that at present all efforts should be made to stop the violence and terror, and described the severity of the latest incidents. President Putin asked the Prime Minister if he would be willing to speak with his guest, Arafat, and the Prime Minister agreed.

The Prime Minister emphasized to Arafat the need to aggressively and immediately work against any expressions of incitement, violence and terror.

Barak and Arafat agreed to maintain joint security cooperation at the field level, and in this regard to renew the activities of the joint liaison office. Chairman Arafat thanked Prime Minister Barak for the medical assistance given to the Palestinians wounded in the attack on the DCO in the Gaza Strip. Chairman Arafat added that he is committed to doing everything he could to put an end to the violence.
