(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)
Prime Minister Ehud Barak this evening (Sunday), 7.1.2001,
convened a meeting of the "peace Cabinet" with the participation
of Ministers Amnon Lipkin-Shahak, Shlomo Ben-Ami and Yossi
Beilin, MK Yossi Sarid, Prime Minister's Bureau Director Gilead
Sher and the head of the Prime Minister's diplomatic-security
staff, Danny Yatom.
Gilead Sher briefed the Cabinet on his meetings in Washington
with President Clinton and his working meetings with the American
peace team.
The peace Cabinet began to assess the situation and will continue
its discussions in the coming days. A further meeting will be
held tonight or tomorrow after the Cabinet receives a detailed
briefing on the results of the meeting in Cairo on the security
issue and the implementation of the Palestinians' commitment to
reduce violence and foil terrorism.
The peace Cabinet views the Palestinians' honoring their
commitments in the security sphere as a key and condition to the
continuation of the process.
