PM Barak: Reducing violence and incitement are first goal
(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)
Prime Minister Ehud Barak, at the weekly Cabinet meeting today
(Sunday), January 7, 2001, commented on Gilead Sher's series of
meetings in Washington and said that reducing the violence and
the incitement are the first goal on the road to further
clarifying the sides' response to US President Bill Clinton's
ideas. To this end, representatives of the sides are due to meet
today in Cairo, along with US and Egyptian representatives, in an
attempt to continue reducing the violence.
Danny Yatom, head of Prime Minister Barak's diplomatic-security
staff, and Cabinet Secretary Yitzhak Herzog visited Moscow, Rome
and Oslo last week and meet with senior Russian, Italian, Vatican
and Norwegian leaders. Yatom and Herzog updated their
interlocutors on the diplomatic and security situations and made
it clear to them that the Palestinian Authority must wage an
effective war on terrorism and incitement before further contacts
can be held.
Yatom and Herzog similarly made it clear that the chances of
achieving an agreement with the Palestinians before the end of US
President Clinton's term are very slim given the continuing
terrorism and violence and PA Chairman Yasser Arafat's unclear
response to the Americans regarding President Clinton's ideas.
