PM Sharon to British PM Blair: "Arafat not acting to foil terrorism; Israel committed to genuine peace but cannot compromise on security of its citizens"

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon spoke on Wednesday, December 19, 2001,
with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and briefed him on the
situation on the ground.
Prime Minister Sharon said that in the past three days there were 49
terrorist incidents in which four Israelis were wounded, including a
young boy, one of whom is in serious condition.
Prime Minister Sharon said that Israel is fed up with words and false
promises. The Prime Minister noted that Palestinian Authority
Chairman Yasser Arafat has not made a strategic decision to abandon
terrorism and added that the latter is not acting to foil terrorism.
The Prime Minister said that several rcent attacks were perpetrated
bye organizations directly subordinate to Arafat. Prime Minister
Sharon said that while Israel is committed to peace - genuine peace,
a peace for generations - and will continue to be so, there can be no
compromise regarding the security of Israel and its citizens.
