Arrest of Nasser Aweis following IDF operation in Tubas District

Nasser Aweis, born in 1970, was a resident of the Balata refugee
camp. In recent months, he has become one of the most senior military
figures in the Fatah Tanzim terrorist organization in Samaria, and
has been responsible for a number of bombing attacks in Israel. He
has also been responsible for recruiting members for military
operations, arming terrorist groups and directing terrorist
operations. In addition, he has been involved in arms smuggling.
Between 1986 and 1991, he was imprisoned, after he was sentenced for
his involvement in violent disturbances. Following his release, he
was wanted for terrorist activity, after his involvement in shooting
attacks. He was deported to Jordan in 1992, and returned to the
territories in 1995.
In recent months, Aweis has consolidated his position as a senior
operative in the Tanzim organization, while maintaining ties with
other Tanzim operatives in Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Noteworthy, in
particular, are his ties with the terrorist infrastructure in
Ramallah. Aweis dispatched a number of suicide bombers to the
Ramallah area.
Aweis was involved in the following attacks:
- The planting of a bomb in the home of an IDF Colonel in Raanana,
on October 30, 2001. There were no casualties.
- The bombing of a wedding hall in Hadera, on January 17, 2002. Six
Israelis were killed and 26 were wounded.
- A shooting attack in Jerusalem on January 22, 2002. In the attack,
two Israelis were killed and 36 were wounded.
- A shooting attack on February 25, 2002, in Neve Yaakov, Jerusalem,
in which an Israeli was killed and 9 other civilians were wounded.
- A shooting and grenade attack on March 9, 2002, in the vicinity of
the Margoa Hotel in Netanya. 2 Israelis were killed, and 50 others
were wounded.
- Aweis was also involved in other attempts to carry out terrorist
attacks.
