PM Sharon congratulates judoka Zeevi

19 Aug 2004

(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon spoke earlier today with Israeli Olympic judoka Arik Zeevi and congratulated him on winning the bronze medal in the men’s 100-kg. competition.  Following is their conversation:

Prime Minister Sharon: “Congratulations to you.  First of all, how is your nose?  I see that you were hurt in one of the contests.  I understand that you are at the Ambassador’s home for the ceremony in memory of the 11 athletes who were murdered by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics.  To my great regret, our struggle against terror is still going on.  With us, more than one happy occasion has been mixed with sorrow.  I wanted to tell you that we are all very proud of you for the bronze medal that you received.  Great pressure was placed on you and you were determined like a true fighter.  You have put joy in the hearts of all Israelis and we all share in your joy.  At our most recent meeting, you told me how much you wanted to win a medal and today you have done it.  I am sure that you will also one day receive a gold medal.  Again, congratulations and we are very, very proud of you.”

Arik Zeevi: “Thank you very much Mr. Prime Minister.  The honor is mine that the Prime Minister took the trouble to congratulate me on air.  I am very happy that the Israeli people witnessed this victory.”
