The President of Israel, Mr. Moshe Katsav, left this morning on a two day State Visit to Poland, during which he will participate in ceremonies and events marking the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp. The visit is on the invitation of the President of Poland, Mr. Aleksander Kwasniewski.
Before President Katsav´s departure a state farewell ceremony took place at the Ben Gurion Airport, attended by the Prime Minister, Ministers, Members of Knesset and other dignitaries.
At the airport the President said: "I am today travelling to the capital of the death empire. I am today going to a place from which the blood of six million of our brothers and sisters cries out to us, to a place in which blindness and darkness reigned over the world, to a place where the world was annihilated and rebuilt."
Approximately 40 heads of state: Royalty, Presidents, Prime Ministers and Ministers from all over the world, are due to attend the official events which will take place in Cracow and in the Birkenau extermination camp.
Today the President will attend an Israeli military ceremony, the first of its kind to take place in Poland, in memory of the 13 Jewish Brigade soldiers who are buried in the British section of the Cracow cemetery.
At the state ceremony which will take place, on Thursday, in Birkenau to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp the President of Israel, the President of Poland and the President of Russia will deliver addresses. The ceremony will be attended by many hundreds of Holocaust survivors from Israel and all over the world who came especially for the ceremony.
On Thursday morning the President will address a gathering organized by the European Jewish Congress in the Cracow Theatre. Heads of state and hundreds of Holocaust survivors will attend this event.
During his two day visit, President Katsav will hold political meetings with the President of Russia, the Vice President of the United States of America, the President of France, the President of Poland, the President of Germany, the President of Ukraine, the President of Romania and the President of Croatia. During these meetings political issues, the situation in the Middle East and Israel´s relations with each of the countries will be raised.
