18 Jul 2006

(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's Chief-of-Staff, Yoram Turbovitz, and his Diplomatic Adviser, Shalom Turgeman, met today (Tuesday), 18 July 2006, with a UN delegation led by UN Secy.-Gen. Kofi Annan's Special Adviser, Vijay Nambiar. The UN delegation, which arrived from Lebanon, raised ideas regarding the situation on the northern border.

Prime Minister Olmert joined the meeting at the end and emphasized that Israel would countinue fighting Hizbullah and would continue to strike at its targets until the abducted soldiers are returned and until the security of Israeli citizens is assured.  The Prime Minister stressed that Israel demands that the G-8's principles be implemented in full: The unconditional release of the abducted soldiers and their return to Israel and the full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution #1559  including the deployment of the Lebanese Army on the border with Israel and the disarming of Hizbullah.

Prime Minister Olmert thanked both UN Secy.-Gen. Annan and the delegation for their efforts to achieve a settlement according to the aforementioned principles.
