Cabinet unanimously appoints Yehuda Weinstein as Israel's next Attorney General

Yehuda Weinstein will assume his post on 1 February 2010.

The full Cabinet today (Sunday), 6 December 2009, unanimously voted to appoint attorney Yehuda Weinstein as Israel's next Attorney General, effective 1 February 2010 - 31 January 2016. The start of his term is subject to completion of the usual procedures regarding conflicts of interest and security clearance.
 
Justice Minister Yaakov Neeman said that he decided to recommend attorney Weinstein after closely considering three other candidates and noted his extensive legal experience, as a former Senior Deputy Prosecutor for the Tel Aviv District, and in the fields of white-collar crime, criminal law, economics law, extradition proceedings, constitutional and administrative law, security matters, and capital market and securities law.
 
Education Minister Gideon Saar, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and outgoing Attorney General Meni Mazuz praised attorney Weinstein's appointment.
 
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu commended Justice Minister Neeman on the appointment process and warmly thanked outgoing Attorney General Mazuz: "You did exemplary work in very difficult conditions. You acted with great wisdom - of both mind and heart. You are worthy of esteem for your actions.
