Meeting of the Ministerial Committee on National Security

The Ministerial Committee on National Security today, (Wed.) 4 November 2009, discussed the political and diplomatic aspects of recent developments regarding the Palestinians, both in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority.
 
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made it clear that Israel's objective is to enter negotiations quickly, while finding a way to overcome the obstacles obstructing this goal. Prime Minister Netanyahu said that the possibility that Palestinian elections might be held soon is causing a polarization of Palestinian Authority positions regarding Israel and is hindering the opening of negotiations.
 
Senior officials from IDF Intelligence, the Israel Security Agency, the Mossad, the Foreign Ministry and the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories presented detailed briefings; ministers discussed the issues that were raised.
 
IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.-Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi updated the Ministerial Committee on the capture of the ship that was smuggling weapons to the northern terrorism area.
