   RESTORED OFFICE BUILDING

Tel Aviv, 1992

Architect: Ada Karmi-Melamed

Many buildings of the Romantic era of the 1920's in Tel Aviv have been demolished or left in disrepair. Today, the value of these buildings is receiving appropriate recognition and investment in their conservation is economically sound.

This former apartment building on Ahad Ha'am Street, now serves as the headquarters of a private bank. Without the need to demolish the original structure, the restored lower storeys balance well with the expansion of the upper ones, creating a clear architectural statement. This statement, obvious in the facade, receives even greater emphasis in the interior, where the tension between the old style and its new interpretation is tenable within the gap created between the two.
