The Valley of the Communities at the Yad Vashem institute memorializes thousands of Jewish communities destroyed by the Nazis. The design of the forty acre site is inspired by the prophet Ezekiel's
vision of the Valley of the Dry Bones. To signify eternal destruction and symbolize a culture that was almost obliterated, it was decided to build nothing above ground. Loosely based on the map of Europe and North Africa, the memorial was carved as a labyrinth of gaping graves. The walls of the canyons of courtyards and dead ends rise to a height of ten meters and impose on the visitor a feeling of being trapped.

At the same time, the open sky above and the surrounding flora express the continuity of life. Dramatically engraved on the enormous Jerusalem boulders are the names of more than five thousands communities.
