| Four thousand years of Jewish history, a century of Zionism, the "ingathering of the exiles", and over four decades of modern statehood have contributed to an Israeli culture which reflects both a particular identity and the myriad characteristics of each contributing community. Artists of all genres - music, art and sculpture, literature, dance, theater and film - attempt to blend tradition and innovation, particularism and universalism. Land and language constitute two major themes of Israeli art. Many Israeli artists have distinguished themselves abroad, winning numerous international prizes. Hebrew literature in translation is extremely popular, and participation in exhibitions and live performances has won international recognition and praise for contemporary Israeli arts.
