| Since biblical times, the Jews have been a people with one monotheistic faith - Judaism, denoting both a religious and a national concept. The Proclamation of the Establishment of the State of Israel guarantees freedom of religion to the entire population. Each religious community is free, by law and in practice, to exercise its faith, observe its holidays and weekly day of rest, and administer its internal affairs. This freedom has created an atmosphere in which Jews, Muslims and Christians pray and practice their religions side by side. In addition, each community has jurisdiction - through its own religious councils and courts - over its religious affairs and matters of personal status such as marriage and divorce.
