| With memories of centuries of persecution and the devastating experience of the Holocaust, Israel's foreign policy has been geared to advance peace by resolving the Arab-Israeli conflict while ensuring the country's security and promoting
|
| cooperation with other nations. Israel maintains good relations with the majority of countries around the world, especially those which share its democratic values. In recent years the attitudes of the surrounding Arab states have undergone a change, as witnessed by the signing of a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, the launching of the Madrid peace talks in 1991, the signing of the Declaration of Principles between Israel and the PLO in 1993, the signing of a peace treaty with Jordan in 1994 and the signing of the Interim Agreement with the Palestinians in 1995. These developments, combined with the new atmosphere prevailing throughout much of the world, have led many countries, new and old, to renew or establish diplomatic relations with Israel. Israel's efforts to build bridges of peace also include the provision of advanced Israeli know-how to Third World countries in such critical areas as agriculture, medicine, science and technology, and the creation of democratic institutions.
