| Israel's survival since the nation was exiled from its homeland by the Romans 2,000 years ago, has had a dramatic history. Anti-Semitism and pogroms pursued the defenseless Jewish communities

| in Europe and the Middle East through the centuries, culminating in the Holocaust unleashed by the Nazis in World War II. This was a deliberate act of genocide, a master plan to wipe out all the Jews in Europe. Six million were slaughtered, including 1.5 million children, shot in mass executions or murdered in gas chambers. Only one-third survived of a prewar population of nine million. The chief goal then became the survival of the nation. The target was to rebuild an independent nation in the ancient Homeland, the Land of Israel. The UN General Assembly, after ongoing violence arising from Arab attacks against the Jewish "Yishuv", the small community in Palestine, called for the creation of a Jewish and an Arab state in Palestine. The Arab countries, with their tens of millions of population, rejected the notion of a Jewish state and unsuccessfully went to war against the reborn Israel. By her 10th anniversary, Israel's population was two million. Today it exceeds five and a half million, living in a stable democracy.
