   ROCKEFELLER MUSEUM

J.D. Rockefeller donated this museum which was built during the British Mandate. It was designed by the architect Harrison and was opened to the public in January 1938.

The museum chronicles the archaeological excavations of the region and includes important discoveries made in Israel such as the ivory of Samaria and the letters of Lakish. The museum also houses an extensive archaeology library and the offices of the Antiquities Authorities.

   SHRINE OF THE BOOK

Located in the Israel Museum complex, the Shrine of the Book houses the Dead Sea Scrolls, which were discovered in the caves of Qumran near the Dead Sea.

Also housed in the shrine are writings from the Bar Kochba period discovered in the Judean Desert. The design of the shrine was inspired by one of the scrolls - the Scroll of the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness. The white dome of the shrine represents the sons of light and the black wall, the sons of darkness.

   JERUSALEM THEATER

A dove with an olive branch atop an obelisk of Jerusalem stone. The Jerusalem Theater is a cultural center. It includes a large theater named for Miles Sherover and an auditorium named after Rebecca Crown.

   ISRAEL FESTIVAL

The Israel Festival has become an integral part of the cultural life of Israel. The pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Festival has now become a most welcome tradition for Israelis from all corners of the country.

   SULTAN'S POOL

This pool was built in the time of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, to store the water which flowed from Ben Hinom Valley. The pool was apparently built on the site of a pool from the Second Temple Period. During the summer, concerts and cultural festivals take place under the stars and against the panoramic backdrop of the Old City walls.
