The Los Angeles Short Film Festival, held in Hollywood (5-14 September 2006), is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world. The winners of this festival often go on to win Academy Awards. This year, four films from Israel were included in the prestigious festival. Two of the directors, Orly Buium and Uri Bar-On, flew to Los Angeles for the event.
While they were in Los Angeles, the directors held a special advance screening of their films at the world renowned University of Southern California Film School. Dean of the Film School and esteemed cinema academic Michael Renov hosted the event.
Orly Buium's "All My Exxx" is a documentary accounting her previous seven relationships. Uri Bar-On's "A Different Love Song" is a boundary pushing scripted piece showcasing the romantic relationship of an elderly couple.
Though their films were very different, both were highly lauded by the film students. An engaging Q&A session followed the screenings, allowing the USC students a chance to learn more from these two talented film makers. Orly Buium discussed among others the difficulty of filming family members and appearing on camera herself. Uri Bar-On, whose film had just won the top prize at the Marbella Film Festival in Spain, touched on the issues of casting and the cinematic beauty that can evolve out of improvised moments.
