  Zevulun Hammer


  Zevulun Hammer was born in Haifa, Israel in 1936. He studied Biblical and Judaic Studies at Bar-Ilan University.

Hammer has been a Member of Knesset since 1969, when he served as Deputy Minister of Education. In 1973-74 he was a Member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, and the Committee on Education and Culture. In 1975 he was appointed Minister of Social Welfare. From 1977-1984 he served as Minister of Education and Culture, and from 1986-1990 as Minister of Religious Affairs. In June 1990 he returned to the Ministry of Education, serving as Minister until 1992.

In the 13th Knesset (1992-1996) he served as a member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Zevulun Hammer heads the National Religious Party.

In June 1996, he was appointed Minister of Education and Culture, and Deputy Prime Minister. In August 1997 he also assumed the post of Minister of Religious Affairs.

Zevulun Hammer passed away on January 20, 1998, following an illness.
