PM Barak Meets Spanish PM Aznar

Prime Minister Ehud Barak met today (Thursday) 22.7.99 with Spanish Prime Minsiter Jose Maria Aznar in a positive atmosphere for very good talks. PM Aznar briefed PM Barak on his round of talks in the region in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and in Gaza.
PM Barak outlined his ideas for advancing the peace process, including implementing the Wye River Memorandum, combining its final phase with discussions on a permanent settlement in a way that would increase the chances of reaching the permanent settlement with the Palestinians and strengthen security. He also clarified before his guest his intention to determinedly work on two paths -- the Syrian and the Palestinian.
PM Barak said that the negotiations on two channels will not be easy and hard problems are at issue. However, Barak noted, good intentions by both parties, cooperation, and discussions on issues as partners will enable a breakthrough in solving the century-old conflict in the Middle East. The prime minister told his guest that views positively the help of the European Union in advancing the peace process and thanked Prime Minister Aznar for his efforts.
