PM Barak: We have yet to hear any openness or flexibility on Chairman Arafat's part

(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ehud Barak met yesterday afternoon (Aug 29, 2000) in his Jerusalem office, with US State Department envoy Dennis Ross. Mr. Ross briefed Prime Minister Barak on the meeting between US President Bill Clinton and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and said that Egypt is prepared to contribute as much as it can and render all necessary assistance in resolving the disagreement between Israel and the Palestinians on the issue of Jerusalem.

Prime Minister Barak reiterated the main points of the Israeli position in general and on the Jerusalem issue in particular, and said that we have yet to hear anything that would indicate openness or flexibility on Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat's part. The Prime Minister estimated the chances of achieving an agreement to be 50-50 and said that we do not yet know which of the two existing possibilities will be realized.

The two men agreed that they would meet again this evening (Wednesday), August 30.

(In response to reports from Cairo, Prime Minister Barak's Media Adviser wishes to make it clear that no meeting has been set between Prime Minister Barak and Chairman Arafat.)
