Sher and Erekat Reach Agreement on Gaza Seaport

(Communicated by the Prime Minister's Media Adviser)

Attorney Gilad Sher met last night September 20, 2000, with Saeb Erekat. The two men signed an agreement that will enable the immediate beginning of construction of a seaport for Gaza. Following negotiations that lasted for several weeks, Sher and Erekat reached agreement on the two remaining contentious issues, namely the size and nature of the area for security checks and environmental problems stemming from the construction.

The Palestinians intend to begin construction forthwith so as to enable the port to open in approximately 18 months.
