Amnon Lipkin-Shahak was born in Tel Aviv in 1944. A career officer, his military education included studies at the IDF Staff and Command College, the National Defense College, and
a Marine Command and Staff College course in the United States. He also holds a
B.A. in general history from Tel Aviv University.
Amnon Lipkin-Shahak joined the IDF's paratroop brigade in 1962, fulfilled
various command positions starting from squad commander and eventually
becoming brigade commander. Following a reorientation course for the
armored corps, he served as a commander of both regular and reserve
divisions. During the Six-Day War, he served as a paratroop commander and
during the Yom Kippur War as deputy paratroop brigade commander under the
command of the late Colonel Uzi Yairi. Following the Peace for Galilee War
he commanded the Beirut and Shouf sectors. He was twice awarded the Medal of Valor.
Lipkin Shahak served as O.C. Central Command (1983-86), Head of the Intelligence Branch (1986-91), Deputy Chief of Staff (1991-95), and as the IDF 15th Chief of General Staff (1995-98), retiring from army service in 1998. As Deputy Chief of Staff he headed the Israeli military team to the negotiations with the Palestinians on the Gaza-Jericho Agreement. As Chief of Staff, he met with his Syrian counterpart to commence a discussion of security arrangements as part of the peace negotiations between the two countries.
Lipkin-Shahak was elected to the 15th Knesset as a member of the Center Party.
In August 1999 he was appointed Minister of Tourism. In June 2000 he was appointed Minister of Transport. He held these positions until March 2001, when he also resigned from the Knesset.
He is married, with five children.
